Images are a core element of most websites but very often the images are not optimized for the web. Not only can image optimization make the page download faster, but it can also improve search engine visibility. Here are some tips:
1. File size
The smaller the file size the faster your website will download and the better the experience will be for your visitors. The File Uploader in the 350pages website builder
compresses the file upon upload to give you an ideal file size for the web. Upon upload, you have the choice of photo sizes so don’t choose a large one if you are including many images on your webpage.
To increase the speed even further you could lower the image quality on your image before uploading.
2. Use the Right File Type
Generally, use JPEGs for photographic images and use PNGs or Gifs for smaller images and graphics.
3. Use Image descriptions
Give your image a name instead of its number to help the search engines understand what the image is depicting. Use a brief description as your image file name and use hyphens when breaking up words.
An “alt” tag provides an alternative description if the image does not load correctly and also it’s information for someone visually impaired who is using a screen reader.
The Alt text will appear when moving a mouse over an image. Google places much weight on an alt attribute on an image.
